Holland or Netherlands?

Posted by on February 6, 2014

Holland or Netherlands? Many tourists always are confused about those names and wonder: is Holland the same as the Netherlands? The official name of the country is the Netherlands and they have twelve provinces. Two of those provinces are North Holland and South Holland. They lay in the west of the country the Netherlands and together they were called Holland. They were the economic power in the Middle Ages. Today North Holland and South Holland still are important and three of the largest cities of the country are located there: Amsterdam, RotterdamĀ and The Hague. Further the people who live in the Netherlands are called Dutch. So are Holland or Netherlands the same? No it’s not. Although it officially is the Netherlands, I used the name Holland because it’s the common name used by tourists.
