During our trip round the Baltic Sea we drove from Vilnius to Riga. North of the city Siauliai in northern Lithuania we drove along the Hill of Crosses. This hill is a pilgrimage. It is believed that the first crosses are placed on the hill in 1831. Families couldn’t locate bodies of rebels who fought against the Russian authorities, so they start to place symbolic crosses on a former hill fort. The Hill of Crosses has three times been destroyed by Soviets. Despite this Catholic pilgrims still brought new crosses and crucifixes. Nowadays there are more than 100.000 crosses at the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania.
