Despite that Curacao only is a small island; I was surprised about the things to do in Curacao. There are several nice excursions, attractions and museums. Definitely enough for at least one week in Curacao.
Perhaps the most famous museum of Curacao is Kura Hulanda. Kura Hulanda is a part of Otrabanda that is renovated since 2000. Accommodated in the houses are Kura Hulanda Museum and Kura Hulanda Resort with restaurant and spa. Kura Hulanda Museum shows art collections and the history of slavery. There also are models of ships, skeletons, maps and paintings. We liked the museum and also the Dutch colonial architecture is worth a visit.
Another interesting museum is Curacao Maritime Museum which is located in Fleur the Marie. The maritime museum has a large collection of ship models, nautical charts and navigation equipment. The exhibition is from colonial time to present. We visited the museum on Saturday. On Saturday and Wednesday the museum has guided harbor tours through Schottegot. You see the bridges of Curacao and also Isla Curacao, the oil refinery.
People who are interested in historical buildings can visit Willemstad or one of the fortresses on the island. The place I liked most was Fort Beekenburg at Caracas Bay. From Fort Beekenburg you have a great view over Caracas Bay and surrounding area. The other forts worthwhile to mention are Fort Amsterdam in Willemstad and Fort Nassau.
But besides buildings and museums Curacao also has flora and fauna. My personal favorite things to do in Curacao was climbing Christoffel Mountain in Christoffel National Park. The hike is about 60 minutes one way and not very steep in the beginning. During the hike you see beautiful trees, plants and animals. The final part is very steep and you have to climb between the rocks to the top of the Christoffel Mountain. Finally you have an amazing view over Curacao. You can see Shete Boka National Park, Knip Bay and of course Christoffel Park. It’s advised to wear good shoes and not to climb the mountain during the rain.
Another place to enjoy Curacao flora and fauna are the Hato Caves near Hato Airport. There are guided tours through the caves every hour. Next to the Hato Caves you find the Indian Trial walk. Here you can encounter iguanas. They lay in trees and cross your path. Really cool animals! Besides flora and fauna you can also see Kunuku houses.
But there are more things to do in Curacao. At Curacao Ostrich Farm you can see ostriches. Every hour there is a safari tour over the farm. You can feed the ostriches and even riding an ostrich! During the tour a guide tells you everything about the animals. A nice and educational tour! After the tour it also is possible to eat ostrich steak in Zambezi Restaurant. We ate ostrich steak and it really is delicious!
And on the last day of our Curacao holiday we visited Sea Aquarium which was located next to our hotel. Also this place is nice to visit. Personally I dislike swimming and diving, so a visit to Sea Aquarium Curacao also is a way to see which animals live in the sea. In Curacao Sea Aquarium you can also swim with dolphins.
The final excursion I mention here is a boat trip to Klein Curacao. This really is one of the things to do in Curacao. We enjoyed it very much. Several operators offer tours to Klein Curacao. We booked an excursion at Miss Ann Boat Trips. Early in the morning the boat departs at Jan Sofat. Unfortunately the sea was a bit rough so some people got sick. After arriving at Klein Curacao we enjoyed food from barbecue. Klein Curacao is a small island. The west side has a white sand beach with clear blue water where you can swim with turtles. It also is a good spot for snorkeling. The east side is rough and not suitable to swim. Two shipwrecks lay on the coast. At the middle of the island you can go to the lighthouse of Klein Curacao. From the top you have a nice view over Klein Curacao. Be cautious for loose parts of the floor!
