Curacao beaches

Posted by on December 17, 2013

If you like beaches then Curacao is a great holiday destination. We rented a car and drove over the island to enjoy the best Curacao beaches. Most Curacao beaches are located at the south and west. The northern coast of Curacao is rough and only has few beaches. What are the best Curacao beaches?

The first beach that we visited was Porto Marie. The trip to the beach already was worth it, because near Sint Willibrordus we spotted several flamingos. Porto Marie Beach is a clean long stretched beach and has a large parking lot and restaurant. Unfortunately the beach was crowded, so we didn’t stay very long.

So we continued our Curacao beaches trip. Next stop Playa Santa Cruz. We made a short stop at Santa Martha to enjoy the view over Santa Martha Bay and environment with in the far distance Mount Christoffel. Wonderful!

Luckily Playa Santa Cruz wasn’t crowded. On the contrary, there only were three people. The beach has fewer facilities than Porto Marie, but we liked it because of the rest and the pelicans. Another advantage is that the sea isn’t deep.

After a couple of hours we went to Knip Bay. Personally I think Grote Knip, or Playa Abou in Papiamento, is the most beautiful of the Curacao beaches. White sand, palm trees, clear blue water and the nearby coral reef. This of course makes the beach a popular place for tourists, so it was crowded but still worthwhile to go.

Along the north coast of Curacao we tried to reach Playa Canoa. Perhaps we choose the wrong road, because the road was in terrible condition. Finally we reached the rough coast, but not Playa Canoa. Looking to the coast I doubt if swimming is the rough sea is comfortable and safe.

After sightseeing we ended at Mambo Beach (Sea Aquarium Beach) daily, which was located in front of Lions Dive hotel where we stayed. A nice beach with white sand, bars, restaurants and possibilities to do water sports. Also scuba diving is possible. Palm trees offer some shadow. A nice place to relax.

At one of the last days of our holiday we went to Klein Curacao. This little deserted island also has a beach and it’s a great place to go for snorkeling. If you are lucky you also can see turtles. Several tour operators offer day excursions to Klein Curacao. Be aware of the risk of getting sunburn. Temperature feels great because of the wind, but meanwhile you get red like a lobster …
