Dubai architecture

Posted by on December 15, 2013

One of the main purposes of my visit to Dubai was seeing architecture in Dubai. The famous Burj Al Arab, Emirates Towers, Palm Islands and Burj Khalifa. These are best known, but there is much more modern Dubai architecture.

A good example is Dubai Marina. This place, south of Palm Jumeirah, is an area with many skyscrapers. Residential towers that accommodate more than 120.000 people. Further shops, hotels and shopping malls between canals and marinas. Sit at a terrace from one of the restaurants and enjoy the beautiful view! A tourist attraction in this area is The Walk. Here you will find shops and restaurants, but also activities like comedy shows, sand sculptures and street painting. Of course Dubai beach also is nearby, so swimming is possible too.

Dubai International Airport has Terminal 1 which is a nice piece of architecture. The long stretched terminal has parks at both ends and looks very spacious. Most characteristic is the white ceiling with triangles of glass in the façades. It always is crowded, even at night. This because Dubai is an important hub between Europe and Asia.

World famous are the Dubai Palm Islands and The World. As visitor it is possible to walk over Palm Island and see the Dubai architecture. When we’re in Dubai only Palm Jumeirah was completely constructed. It was amazing to see the island! Incredible that people can construct something like this. During our stay in Dubai we also made a flight by seaplane and saw these islands from air. A report and photos can be seen on Dubai excursions.

Sheikh Zayed Road is the most important road in Dubai and connects everything. Because of this also many skyscrapers with offices and hotels are built along the road. Driving from Bur Dubai southwards the first area with skyscrapers is around World Trade Centre where you see the Emirates Towers. This is one of the main business districts from Dubai. More south you see the tallest tower in the world, Burj Khalifa. During our visit this tower unfortunately was still under construction, but already astonishing and incredibly tall.

Still one of the most famous buildings in Dubai is Burj Al Arab. Personally this 7* hotel is my favourite. The hotel has the beautiful shape of a dhow. Furthermore the combination of the white façade with blue glass looks wonderful against the clear blue sky. It is a pity that you need to make an appointment for the Sky bar, so we couldn’t enter the building or island. But from the beach or road you also have a great view! Another place from where you’ve a great view on Burj Al Arab is Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Visit it at night and see the different colours at this wonderful piece of Dubai architecture.
