Travel report from my trip to Dubai in 2009. After I graduated from the study architecture I went to Dubai, a modern city in a huge desert. Being curious to see buildings like Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, Palm Island and the shopping malls with sights. A friend accompanied me and we also visited places like the old city, Dubai desert and the beach.

In 2009 we flew with KLM from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Dubai International Airport. But last years airlines like Emirates and Turkish Airlines frequently fly from destinations in Europe to Dubai. With websites like expedia.com or skyscanner.nl it is possible to find good deals for flights to Dubai. Another chance for a good deal is flying with Etihad Airways to Abu Dhabi Airport. Take a taxi or coach from Abu Dhabi to Dubai.

The trip to Dubai was amazing! So many new impressions and wonderful things that we’ve seen in Dubai. The country has an interesting mix of Arabian and Western influences. Modern because of architecture, but also traditional with women in burqa. First days you need to get used to this. Several moments of the day you hear the mosques, including at 6am. By that early in the morning you’re already awake. Also women who refuse to step in the elevator in the hotel together with a man. It felt a bit weird for us. Another thing is that you can’t get alcoholic drinks, except in hotels. Because of that we frequently had dinner in hotels and it was great to have the English pub Sherlock Holmes in our hotel. We’ve been there daily for some pints of beers. Read my review about the hotel here.
The things built in Dubai also are amazing. It seems it can’t be crazy enough! World tallest skyscraper, a 32×8 metres aquarium, glass pyramids, Palm Islands, beautiful green lawns and a Ski dome in the middle of the desert. Wonderful and enough to do for two weeks. For us the trip was great and the perfect mix of an old city, attractions, excursion, the Dubai desert, Dubai beach and nightlife. I definitely want to visit Dubai again in the future!
